I
used a 1/2 lag bolt with head cut off for the centers. It is
important to drill the pilot hole along the center axis to reduce the
vibration.

The
Lag bolts turned in bronze bushing mounted in the end of lathe.
Bronze is a metal with "self lubricating" characteristics. I also
used a spray lubricant. Because I had longer blanks than was
necessary, I wasn't worried about staining. I also placed a 1/2
in washer between the bushing and the leg blank to further reduce
friction.

I used a 1/2 inch variable speed drill
as the drive motor. It was attached to a plate at the end using
the same fastener for the end handle. I didn't not secure the
drill hard to allow a little slippage.
